Preparing for Your First Lesson

Welcome to SIRE! We are excited to have you join our community.

If you are interested in riding at SIRE, please complete the registration form below. Once the registration forms are received, you will be contacted to set up an appointment for your evaluation. Please review the list of Precautions and Contraindications on the registration form. If the client has one or more of these conditions, therapeutic riding may not be recommended. Please contact our Client Relations Coordinator, Marley Brooks at Marley@sire-htec.org if you have any questions concerning these contraindications.

Before beginning regular riding lessons, all prospective riders participate in an initial evaluation with one of our certified instructors.

The evaluation allows our team to get to know you, assess your individual strengths and goals, determine the most appropriate equine-assisted services, and ensure we can provide the safest and most beneficial experience possible. It also gives you and your family the opportunity to ask questions and become familiar with our program.

The evaluation fee is $120 and is required prior to your evaluation appointment. After your evaluation is complete, our staff will discuss lesson recommendations, scheduling options, and next steps for enrollment.

Getting Started

For the safety and comfort of both riders and horses, please wear appropriate riding attire to every lesson.

Required

  • Long pants (jeans, riding pants, or leggings without bulky seams)

  • Tennis shoes or hard-soled boots with a low heel

  • An ASTM/SEI-approved equestrian riding helmet

If you do not have your own helmet, SIRE is happy to provide one during your lesson.

Please Avoid

  • Sandals or open-toed shoes

  • Loose, flowing clothing that could become caught on tack

  • Dangling jewelry or large hoop earrings

Each lesson is individualized to meet the rider's unique goals and abilities. Depending on the program, lessons may include mounted activities, horse care, groundwork, and other equine-assisted activities designed to promote physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth.

Throughout your lesson, you'll be supported by a certified instructor along with trained volunteers who help create a safe, encouraging, and successful experience for both you and your horse.

Most importantly, come ready to learn, have fun, and celebrate every accomplishment

“I cannot say enough about the instructors, staff, and volunteers, and what it means to me as a parent that he is accepted, supported, and loved from the beginning. We are so fortunate to have found SIRE and that he can continue to ride as an adult.”
